The Problem

The major problem in plastic waste management is the Processing of Plastics.

Only 25% of plastic waste is recycled. The rest is left to settle in the landfills.

Upcycling of Plastics was proposed as a solution to reduce the waste generated. Research suggested PET bottles be the most commonly found plastic waste.

The Idea

The Process

Bottles are cut into long strips and collected.

Ends of the strips are put together and joined. Here a custom Laser pattern was used to join the strips.

In the end, the long strip is heat treated to relieve stress by passing over a hot roller and rolled into Bobbins.

This becomes a raw material for
textile and fashion industry.

This manual prototype could be easily automated and thus plastic can be upcycled at a large scale.
